Mathematics

Introduction
Sterling College provides solid preparation and mental discipline that prepares Mathematics majors for career opportunities in today’s technology driven world.

Program Overview
A major in mathematics features applications of mathematics in the physical sciences and computer science, providing knowledge and skills required for entry level positions in business, industry or secondary education.

Areas of Emphasis
Mathematics majors often follow one of two avenues to insure success following graduation.

  1. Applied Mathematics
  2. Secondary Teacher Licensure

Applied Mathematics
Some Sterling mathematics graduates have pursued graduate work in mathematics, and now are teaching at the college level. Majors may also choose to pursue graduate level studies in the area of mathematics or other related fields. Mathematics is also vital in supplementing the medical school preparatory program. With the addition of Biology, Mathematics majors could pursue a graduate degree in Biostatistics in order to work in medical research, or Biometry, an agricultural field. This major also prepares Sterling College graduates for a career with government agencies such as NSA or NASA.

Secondary Teacher Licensure
Most common is the coupling of the Mathematics major with Secondary Teacher Licensure. This prepares students for a career in mathematics education at the junior high and high school level. Sterling College works very hard with the Education Department; thus we have produced excellent math teachers who have impressed the high schools employing our graduates.
