About the Program

The English department at Sterling College is devoted to making its students excellent writers, versed in great literature. Taught with a Christian worldview, majors and minors learn to think critically about how language and literature impact the world around us.

The English student at Sterling College utilizes a variety of techniques and critical approaches when analyzing literature. Students evaluate the author’s style and possible messages behind the work. The professors in the English department encourage students to think about how the message is portrayed and how it relates to the current culture, both for the Christian and non-Christian.

English students are also given chances to voice their opinion on difficult questions about faith and Christianity through writing, giving students a chance to express their viewpoint through succinct and powerful essays.

English majors are also eligible to become 6-12 teachers by pairing their major with the professional studies coursework offered by the education department.
