ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF STERLING COLLEGE
Sterling, Kansas

ARTICLE I – NAME

Sec. 1 This organization shall be known as the Alumni Association of Sterling College.

ARTICLE II – PURPOSE

Sec. 1 The purpose of the Association shall be to maintain and foster the spirit of loyalty to the College as Alma Mater; to unite the graduates, former students, and friends in a common interest in the welfare of the College; and to form a bond of fellowship uniting them in their common interests.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

Sec. 1 All graduates are, “ipso facto,” members of this Association.

Sec. 2 All former students who terminated attendance prior to the 1995-96 academic year with at least 15 hours of credit at Sterling College (Kansas) shall be recognized as Association members. All former students who terminated attendance during or after the 1995-96 academic year with at least 24 hours of credit at Sterling College (Kansas) shall be recognized as Association members. Former students of the Sterling College Continuing Education Program (Missouri) who have completed 24 hours of credit with Sterling College will upon request be granted membership in the Association. All recipients of Sterling College Honorary Degrees are members of the Association.

Sec. 3 Any person who is or has been a member of the faculty or staff of the College may request associate membership in the Association.

Sec. 4 Any friend of the College who desires to support the activities of the Association may become as associate member by application to the Alumni Council.

ARTICLE IV – OFFICERS

Sec. 1 The officers of the Association shall be President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and immediate Past President. They shall be elected by the Alumni Council for terms of one year and may be elected for two succeeding terms. The Association officers shall serve as officers of the Alumni Council.

Sec. 2 These officers shall constitute the Executive Committee, which may transact business and make decisions, which shall be subject to ratification by the Alumni Council.

Sec. 3 In the event of a vacancy, the unexpired term of an officer shall be filled by the Alumni Council from among its membership.

Sec. 4 No elected officer, except the Secretary-Treasurer, may serve more than three years consecutively in the same office.

Sec. 5 No person shall hold elected office that is not a regular member of the Association.

ARTICLE V – DUTIES OF OFFICERS

Sec. 1 The President shall preside at all meetings of the Association, appoint necessary committees, and have general supervision of the activities of the Association.

Sec. 2 The Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President in his/her absence or inability to act.

Sec. 3 The Secretary-Treasurer shall keep an accurate record of all business transactions, committee appointments, and reports; shall give notice of meetings, notify officers of their election and committees of their appointment; and shall care for such funds of the Association as are so designated, keeping accurate records and making full reports of same.

Sec. 4 Audit of Association account shall be made annually as a part of the regular audit of Sterling College records.

ARTICLE VI – ALUMNI COUNCIL

Sec. 1 In order to enlarge the participation in the leadership of the Association, an Alumni Council shall be established of up to 24 members to include the Alumni Council Executive Committee; the Alumni Director; the Alumni Representatives on the board of Trustees; a Representative of the Golden Club to be elected from each year’s new membership. The remainder to be made up of Alumni Chapter Representatives and members at large making an effort to find representatives from each of the last five decades.

Sec. 2 Representatives of organized Alumni Chapters shall be elected by the chapter for a one-year term subject to re-election at the discretion of the chapter, such election to be reported to the Association’s Alumni Director.

Sec. 3 All Alumni council representatives will serve three-year terms.

Sec. 4 In the event of a vacancy in any position, the unexpired term shall be filled by the Alumni Council.

Sec. 5 Duties of the Alumni Council shall be to formulate and implement plans of action and service for the Association in the interest of the College. The Alumni Council shall elect the officers and association representatives at the May meeting. They shall select alumni representatives from the Board of Trustees who are willing to serve.

ARTICLE VII – MEETINGS

Sec. 1 The Alumni Council shall hold three meetings during each year to be held about August, January, & May.

Sec. 2 The regular business meeting of the Association shall be held sometime within the Commencement season of each year, such time to be determined and announced by the Executive Committee. At this meeting, reports of officers and committees shall be heard, and any matters of business presented. Special meetings and activities may be arranged by agreement of the Alumni Council, with appropriate notice to the membership.

ARTICLE VIII – BOARD MEMBERS

Sec. 1 The Alumni Council shall select an Association member annually to be recommended to the Sterling College Board of Trustees as an Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Sec. 2 The member selected shall serve for a period of three years on the Sterling College Board of Trustees.

Sec. 3 In the event of a vacancy in the position of Alumni Representative to the Sterling College Board of Trustees, the unexpired term shall be filled by the Alumni Council in the same manner as a regular term.

ARTICLE VIII – ALUMNI DIRECTOR

Sec. 1 The College Alumni Director will serve as an ex-officio member of the Alumni Council providing liaison with College officials and assistance as requested.

ARTICLE IX – AMENDMENTS

Sec. 1 Any article of this constitution may be amended at any regular meeting of the Association by a two-thirds majority vote of the members present.
