BRAZELTON HAS CAREER NIGHT AS STERLING OVERCOMES KWU
Sterling, Kan. - Zach Goodrich may have only scored five points against the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes, but two of those five points came in the most clutch of situations as the Sterling College Warriors were victorious on Thursday night in the Gleason Center. With 2.6 seconds left in a 72-72 tie ball game, Goodrich pulled up and hit a two point jump shot to give Sterling a much needed 74-72 victory.
SC started out slow with a four minute scoring drought to start the game. Playing from behind was not expected and Sterling had to fight its way into a first half lead. Three point shooting once again played a big part for Sterling as the Warriors went 4-9 in the first half from behind the arc. However, Kansas Wesleyan countered by shooting 5-12 from three point land. A late run by Sterling capped off by a Cody Brazelton slam sent Sterling into the locker room with a 38-32 halftime lead.
The Warrior players appeared to be experiencing déjà vu as Sterling started out slowly again in the second half. KWU was able to overtake the lead early in the period and force Sterling to play from behind. To get back into the game, SC turned to Brazelton. The Coyotes were unable to find an answer for Brazelton as the Warriors took advantage of his dominance in the paint. After a back and forth half, Sterling would go on top for good on Goodrich's heroics and wrap up a 74-72 win.
Brazelton had a career night, leading all scorers with 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Trent Stutzman was in double figures again for SC, going 4-9 from behind the arc and scoring 14 points. Zach Poole and Raheem Odomes both added 10 points for Sterling.
Matthew Dickman led KWU in scoring with 19 points. Tyler Antenen added 16 points, Trevor Kuhlman scored 12, and Brandon Greer scored 11.
With the victory, Sterling moves to 15-10 on the season, 11-4 in the KCAC. With Tabor College losing on Thursday, Sterling has moved into a tie atop the conference with three games remaining in the regular season. SC will travel to Ottawa University on Saturday for the first of those three games for a 7:00 pm tip-off against the Braves.
