Director of Alumni and Parent Relations

Amy Thompson graduated from Sterling in 1996. Armed with her degree in communication and theatre arts, she headed to Nashville, Tenn., where she did her internship and then found employment in the country music industry. However, she could not pass up the opportunity to return to her beloved SC when she was offered the position of director of alumni and parent services in 1998. After serving in that role, and briefly that of admissions counselor for five years, Amy decided to quit talking about graduate school and moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she obtained an M.A. in communication from Bethel University.

Lynn Valentine

Housekeeping

Lynn first came to Sterling College so that her daughter could go to college.  She found out that the kids are the reason that she stays. She enjoys hobbies such as crochet, quilting, knitting, scrapbooking, and card making. She has been married for 40 years.  She has 4 children, almost 2 grandchildren, and 2 step grandchildren.  She also has a dog named Lady and a bird called Smokey.

Jon Van Veldhuizen

Admissions Counselor (Athletes, Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Sports Management)

Two years ago Jon made the journey from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia suburb) to complete his degree in Exercise Science. He is excited to be in this position which allows him to have a direct impact on the college by sharing his experiences from his time as a student. Jon most appreciates the opportunities for students to grow spiritually through the strong Christ-centered atmosphere at Sterling. Jon enjoys a plethora of activities but is most enamored with lifting weights and making hiking trips to practice his scenic photography.

Rebecka Vessey

Assistant Registrar

Rebecka Vessey is a recent addition to the Registrar’s Office and never once imagined that she would end up living and working in the middle of Kansas.  She grew up as a well-seasoned traveler; part of a missionary family stationed in the South Pacific.  Even after marriage, to Tom Vessey, a professor at Sterling College, the traveling did not end.  They and their family spent several wonderful years living and studying in St.

Administrative Assistant for Student Life

Melissa is originally from Pretty Prairie, KS.  She fell in love with Sterling College while attending from 2004-2007.  After graduating with a B.A in psychology, she spent four years working with adults with severe mental illness at a mental health center.  She joined the SC staff in July 2011 as an administrative assistant in the Student Life Office.  Melissa’s passion is that every student would come to know Christ in a personal and transformational way.  When she’s not at work, Melissa enjoys cooking, traveling to Pennsylvania to see her extremely cu

Laurel Watney

Library Assistant

Laurel graduated from Gordon College with a degree in biblical studies and a minor in missions. She and her husband, Mark, were missionaries in Turkey for a year and a half early in their marriage. They moved to Sterling in 2006 and absolutely love it. They have three sons, Caleb, Micah and Josiah.

Laurel began working in the library in 2010 and really enjoys working with the students. She has led women’s Bible studies on campus and is co-leading a group of students to the Mediterranean this summer.

Deb Wiebe

Athletic Department Office Manager

 Deb was born and raised here in Sterling, Kansas. She graduated from Sterling high school and attended Hutchinson Community College. She now lives in Sterling with her husband, Curt and together have two children, Brenna and Derek as well as their grandaughter, Morgan. Brenna is married to SC Alumni, Brandon Winn.

 Deb started working in the athletic department in 1995 and can truly say, "This has been the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.  Getting to know the student athletes and working with a great coaching staff truly makes for the best job!"

Rick Winters was born and raised in Florida and moved to Kansas in 1987. Rick started working for Sterling College in 1999.  He and his wife Diana have 5 children. Rick enjoys the outdoors and hunting in his spare time.

Melissa Wisner

Public Relations Coordinator

Melissa Wisner ’09 is not a new face at Sterling College, but she does have a new name and a new position.  Melissa (Yarrow) began her journey at Sterling College in 2005 as a freshman pursuing Communications and Christian Ministries.  Upon graduation four years later Melissa was hired as the McCreery Resident Director for two years.  Following her time as an RD, Melissa moved from McCreery Hall to Kilbourn, and from Student Life to the Marketing department.  She now holds the position of public relations coordinator.  She is excited to use her communications

Joshua Wisner

Josh (a.k.a "Wiz") came to Sterling as a student to play basketball. We are fortunate enough to have him back this year, not as a student, but as the Resident Director for Kilbourn Hall. Josh loves the opportunity that being an RD allows him to b e involved in young men's lives and to be a positive influence for them as they go through college.
