Kraft and Tinkel named NAIA All-Americans

Sterling College seniors, Ashley Kraft and Jacci Tinkel, received NAIA Division II All-American honors, following their impressive individual seasons and leading the Lady Warriors to a 27-6 overall record and a trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Sterling also was the KCAC regular season Co-Champions this past year.

Governor Declares ‘Kansas Private College Week’

Governor Kathleen Sebelius has declared April 13-19, 2009, Kansas Private College Week, celebrating the wide range of choices among the state’s higher education offerings. The 18 colleges of the Kansas Independent College Association have marked this week with the launching of a website, www.Proud2BPrivate.com, specially designed to introduce students and their families to the colleges and to encourage campus visits during the spring and summer.

Mike Woodruff to give Sterling College Commencement Address

Mike Woodruff of Lake Forest, Ill., will give Sterling College’s Commencement address during the College’s 117th Commencement ceremonies at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 25 in Smisor Stadium.

Woodruff, the Senior Pastor at Christ Church Lake Forest, will present a speech titled “Cross the Line.” He has been on staff at Christ Church since 1999 and became the senior pastor in 2003.

Representative Josh Svaty to be Baccalaureate Speaker

Josh Svaty, a Sterling College graduate of 2002, will give the Baccalaureate address titled “Sterling Discernment" on Friday, April 24, 2009, in Culbertson Auditorium.
Svaty has served as the State Representative of the 108th District in Kansas since 2003 when he became the youngest member of the Kansas House of Representatives for two terms. He currently serves on the committee for Energy and Utilities, Agriculture and Natural Resources and is on the joint committee on Energy and Environmental Policy.

SC Psychology Students Attend SWPA Conference, Celebrate Professor’s Accomplishments

Over the last 28 years Dr. Arn Froese, chair of the behavioral science department at Sterling College, has taken nearly 150 students with him to the Southwestern Psychological Association’s annual conference. This year nine students attended with him, listening to presentations by psychologists, Dr. Froese included, and celebrating Dr. Froese’s recent appointment as president-elect of the SWPA.

Sterling College Hosts West Kansas National Forensic League National Qualifying Tournament

On April 17 and 18 Sterling College hosted more than 400 judges and high school competitors for the West Kansas National Forensic League National Qualifying Tournament. Nineteen high schools competed in the tournament, and over fifty Sterling College students and faculty members volunteered as judges or hosts.

Sterling College Students Travel to Ghana

A team of nine students and one alumna from Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas, left April 29 for Takoradi, Ghana, for a two week mission trip. The team will work with a local ministry, leading church and worship services; evangelizing on the street; planning and carrying out youth variety shows; and teaching elementary school children math and English. They will also have the opportunity to speak about evangelism on SKYY, Ghana’s national television/radio station.

Sterling College Students Travel to India on Mission Trip

Seven Sterling College students and two leaders left April 29 on Sterling College’s first cross-cultural trip to India. For two weeks they will be working with three children’s outreach programs in the city of Ongole in the state of Andhra Pradesh. One of the programs provides homes for abandoned/orphaned children; the second places special-needs children in foster family situations; and the third holds after-school programs for at-risk, impoverished children. The team will also visit some of the area’s historical and cultural sites.

Sterling College graduates 110 during 2009 Commencement

Sterling College graduated 110 students at the College’s 117th annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, April 25, 2009
The Commencement ceremonies were held on McCracken Field in Smisor Stadium, and began at 9:45 a.m. with the traditional bagpipe, flag, faculty, staff and student processional. Reverend Mike Woodruff, senior pastor of Christ Church in Lake Forest, Ill., delivered the Commencement address titled, "Cross the Line."
