KWCH Features Sterling as a “One of a Kind” Town | November 4, 2011

When KWCH channel 12 news received the nomination from Sterling townspeople to feature Sterling in their “One of a Kind” contest, they responded with alacrity. Sterling boasts great community and fantastic stories, including being influential in the lives of a cancer survivor, the Miller High Life guy, and an up and coming country music singer. The town is also home to a host of faithful professors, teachers, businessmen and women, and families who give Sterling its reputation as an accepting community.

Alumni Awarded for Service | November 2, 2011

Six individuals were honored during the homecoming festivities at Sterling College for their talent, volunteerism, or contribution and loyalty to Sterling College. Two alumni, Sasha Hildebrand and Dr. George Stickel, were the recipients of the annual Alumni Award and Alumni Citation Award. Both awards are given to alumni who have excelled in their careers, have exhibited service to society, and loyalty to Sterling College.

Senior Associate Professor Celebrates 40 Years of Service | November 2, 2011

Senior Associate Professor Diane DeFranco-Kling was honored for 40 years of service to Sterling College this fall. DeFranco-Kling is the acting and movement specialist, choreographer, and costume designer for the College. Over the years, she has taught a variety of theatre and dance classes, and has encouraged hundreds of students to pursue acting, whether it is at Sterling College in the yearly musicals and plays, or on to professional acting from New York City to Denver and Los Angeles.

Students Participate in Bioblitz 2011 | October 26, 2011

Leonore Enfield and Tyler Wise, students from the Sterling College department of natural sciences and mathematics, were invited to present their research at the 2012 Meeting of the Central Plains Society of Mammologists. For the past two years, these students have teamed up with assistant professor of biology, Dr. Jonathan Conard, to study the effects of prairie restoration on small mammals. They have presented their results every year since 2010, and plan to continue their research until 2014.

Debate Team Sweeps First Place | October 26, 2011

The Sterling College Debate Team took first place this past weekend at the Sunflower Swing Tournament on October 21-23. The tournament was hosted by Sterling College and co-hosted with Bethel College on the Bethel campus in North Newton, Kan.

Illustrator Eric Wieringa to Visit | October 25, 2011

Illustrator Eric Wieringa will open his show at Sterling College on Thursday, October 27, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Wieringa, from St. Charles, Mo., will be displaying works that cover two different genres. He will display commissioned illustrations as well as sci-fi/fantasy paintings created for the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live exhibition in Kansas City, Mo. His paintings, mostly in oil with colored pencil, cover a variety of topics and markets.

Debate Team Victorious Again | October 19, 2011

The Sterling College Debate team returned from Texas victorious, winning their 2ndtournament of the season. The tournament was held on the campus of West Texas A&M and co-hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University October 7-9. Sterling had three teams advance to elimination rounds, with Alex Lawhon-Bush and Brett Smith named tournament champions while team mates Jessica Brayton and Nolan Chaney finished 2nd overall, and Brandon Hoesli and Courtney Cavazos placed 3rdoverall. Every Sterling team that participated in the tournament, finished with a winning record.

Invisible Children Tour Comes to Sterling | October 19, 2011

Invisible Children will screen its latest documentary, Tony, on November 8, at CrossPoint Church. Invisible Children, a media-based nonprofit dedicated to ending Africa’s longest-running war, tells about the 25 years of  war in Central Africa, perpetuated by a rebel group called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
