Lady Warriors Win Fifth Straight KCAC Regular Season Title on Senior Night
Sterling, Kan. - The 2010-2011 Sterling College Lady Warriors are Co-Champions of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). With a win in the Gleason Center on Saturday night over the McPherson College Lady Bulldogs 57-44, Sterling wrapped up their fifth straight KCAC Regular Season Title and on Senior Night and will be the overall number one seed in the KCAC Championship Tournament, earning the conference's first automatic bid to the 2011 NAIA State Farm Women's Basketball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
Saturday night's win did not come easily for the Lady Warriors as McPherson's defense stifled SC in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs held Sterling to only 27.6% shooting in the half and Sterling held only a narrow 23-21 lead at halftime.
Sterling struggled again in the second half, but was able to open up a comfortable lead by the end of the ballgame. The Lady Warriors managed to shoot 32.1% in the second half and was able to push the lead to 14 points before winning by a final of 13 points, 57-44.
Britany Gasper of Sterling led all scorers with 22 points and also pulled in nine rebounds. Gasper was the only Lady Warrior in double figure scoring with fellow senior Jannica Schultze getting close with nine points.
Elice Frey led McPherson in scoring with 10 points and had 10 rebounds.
The game was the final regular season home game for the six member 2010-2011 senior class. Seniors on this year's team are Candace Ewert, Erica Herman, Schultze, Cami Racette, Gasper, and Madison Lucas. This senior class is the only senior class in Sterling history to win four KCAC Regular Season Championships while at Sterling. These seniors have an overall KCAC Regular Season record of 66-6 and an overall home record of 52-4.
With the win tonight, the Lady Warriors are 16-2 in the KCAC, 24-4 overall. Sterling will be the overall top seed in the KCAC Tournament and will host Bethany College in the Quarter Final Round on Thursday, February 24 at 7:00 pm in the Gleason Center. Admission to the game will be eight dollars for an adult, five dollars for senior citizens and three dollars for students.
