Dave Underwood

Coach David Underwood is in his second year as the men's soccer coach at Sterling College. Underwood was hired in January of 2008 to replace Brandon Winn who resigned folowing the 2007 season.

“We are thrilled that Dave has decided to lead our men’s soccer program at Sterling College,” said Athletic Director, Andy Lambert.  “Coach Underwood is an outstanding individual and is interested in using soccer as way to help young men develop spiritually and athletically here at Sterling College.”

In his first year at Sterling College, Underwood guided the Warriors to the best start in Sterling men's soccer history, and  ended the season with a 10-7 record.

Prior to coming to Sterling, Underwood has served as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Wheaton Academy in Chicago, Illinois. Underwood has over sixteen years of experience at the high school, college and club levels.

In his time at Wheaton, Underwood guided the women’s team to their first IHSA state championship and has compiled a record of 75–30-15 in five seasons. The Warriors won 5 conference championships and Underwood was been named PSL Coach of the Year three times. Coach Underwood served as an assistant with the men for five years and was the men's head coach in 2007 leading the Warriors to a 15-4-5 record, a regional championship and an appearance in the secitional final.

"I love being at Sterling College," commented Underwood after his first year. "Sterling has a wonderful family atmosphere and it is truly a place where the relational component is not only encouraged, but expected. It's a very special place. Additionally, Sterling is a place where students can grow in their faith in Christ, and experience mental, physical and social growth as well."

Underwood has earned  NSCAA National and Advanced National Diplomas,and has attended coaching symposiums at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and World Class Coaching.

Dave and his wife Jennifer have four children: Emily, Jacob, Madeleine, and Patrick.

Underwood holds a BS from Grace College in Business Administration and Psychology, an MA from Grace Theological Seminary in Ministry, and an MA from West Virginia University in Athletic Coaching Education.

 PLAYING EXPERIENCE

Underwood grew up in Dayton, Ohio and played HS soccer at perrenial power, Dayton Christian. During his time at DCS the Crusaders advanced to the state elite-eight in his junior and senior years. After high school, Underwood played at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN and was named top newcomer for the Lancers in 1988.
