I Corinthians is a letter about crossroads. As a city, Corinth was at a crossroads. The capital city of Rome’s Achia province, it was located right on the main land route between East and West. It was a hub for several major sea routes. Corinth was a coming together of people and commerce, and was known for both its intellectual and material opulence.
That cultural reality made for some challenges as a fledgling church struggled to forge an identity in such an environment. At the point when Paul wrote this letter to the church at Corinth, they were at a crossroads. Would they get stuck into their identity as a collective bound together to Christ and each other? Or would they give up in the face of the tall task of sustaining a community that was in many ways counter-cultural?
These are questions resonant for Sterling College today. This semester we will explore what it looks like to be bound to the vision of our institution’s Christ-centeredness. We will consider what it looks like for us to grow in our faithfulness to Christ and our faithfulness to each other. We will look to do the hard work of staying alert, standing firm in our faith, and developing strong bonds. And we will try to discern how we can live all of that out in love.
