|Sterling College is deeply concerned about the spiritual growth of each individual student and employee. Sterling‘s chapel program is focused on the process of spiritual formation, initiating, nurturing, and sustaining our students in a life of discipleship to Jesus Christ. Chapel provides students opportunities to reflect on foundational issues of life, as well as an opportunity to be exposed to a Christian perspective on these issues. Chapel plays a vital role in the life of our institution, as well as a strategic role in the lives of our students. All full-time students are required to earn 14 chapel credits each semester.||
2013-2014 Theme: "The People who Wander Toward the God of Wonders"
Verse of the Year: Then the LORD said: "I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you." Ex. 34.10 (NIV 2011)
God wanted to lead his people to himself. Away from the slavery and oppression of Egypt, and into a land where they could worship him intimately. And so with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, he made a way out for the Israelites, and called them to something better.
It took a while for the Israelites to reach that better place, however. They struggled to believe and they struggled to obey. Even though God had done mighty wonders, they found themselves wandering away from him. And so he allowed them to wander.
The wandering lasted a long time, but it didn’t last forever. And through the process, God worked. He helped the Israelites forge an identity that was rooted in his character and works. He taught them about himself, and about how they communicate those realities to the people around them.
God has done many wonders throughout the history of Sterling College. He has worked in the lives of individuals, and used this institution to make his name known. We enter into that narrative, knowing that we are prone to wonder. But God continues to call us back to him. He continues to hone our identity as his children who were created to bring glory to his name.
