History

About the Program

History takes all of human experience as its subject matter.  The study of the past enriches our ability to think critically and imaginatively, trains us to communicate clearly and concisely, and enables us to relate to people in a variety of different situations.  As a History student at Sterling College, you will draw on a range of approaches to understand diverse societies in various times and places, giving you essential tools for understanding our world today.  

Because studying History cultivates critical thinking and communication skills that are valuable in any setting, it consistently ranks as one of the most popular majors in American colleges and universities.  Since the 1980s, nearly 20% of students earning a bachelor’s degree in the Humanities have chosen a History major.  

Many of our students obtain licensure to teach History and Government through the Sterling Teacher Education Program, which in recent years has enjoyed a job placement rate of close to 100%.  Due to the breadth of their training, historians are also well prepared to succeed in law school, seminary, and other professional programs.  With or without graduate study, a History degree equips students for success in a wide range of careers in education, research, journalism, business, public service, and more.

At Sterling College, you will have the opportunity to study History in small classes that offer the flexibility to explore your own interests and pursue your own goals.  You will build strong relationships with your fellow students.  And you will enjoy the mentorship of experienced professors who are dedicated to Sterling's mission of servant leadership and Christian liberal arts education.
