David Landis serves as the Vice President for Administration and Institutional Initiatives. David is a 1988 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in American Studies. Through his involvement with Campus Crusade for Christ at SC (now known as CRU), Landis became convinced, not only of the truth of the gospel, but that he needed to work in places where he could make a difference in the lives of young people.
Throughout his time at SC, his academic advisor, Dr. George Stone, encouraged Landis to pursue a career in education. Instead, he took a job as a youth pastor in Valley Center, Kansas and then went on to work at Friends University in Corporate and Foundation relations. After resisting the call to teaching for several years, Landis went back to school, earning a second bachelors in secondary education from Newman University in 1994. This led to a teaching stint at Hesston Middle School before taking a job at Central Christian Academy in Wichita. This job merged all of his previous professional experiences as he taught classes, led chapels and served as Director of Development.
Landis went on to earn a Masters in Educational Administration from Wichita State University in 2001 and began his administrative career with Trinity Academy in Wichita that fall. Following six years at Trinity, Landis spent the next eight years at Berean Academy as the Assistant Superintendent.
Landis states, “I am convinced that the primary ministry of Christian education is the transformation of its students. Dr. Jeff Myers of Summit Ministries, defines transformation as "A complete and permanent change to what you were designed to be all along." This echoes Paul’s words in II Cor. 5:17a “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Sterling College is in the business of changing lives through excellent education and spiritual transformation.”
Part of Landis’ role at Sterling will be to oversee spiritual life and to coordinate the Freeman Lecture Series. In addition, he will help oversee SC’s physical plant, technology services, bookstore and food service. With 20 years of fundraising and development experience, Landis will also assist the advancement team as well.
In 1990, Landis married Staci (Kennedy) and the couple resided in Wichita and Valley Center for many years. David and Staci have four children, Joshua (SC student, class of 2016), Abigail (SC student, class of 2018), Elizabeth and Jacob. The Landis family now resides in Newton.
