Warrior Golf wins the Prairie Cup
10/16/2007

The Warrior golf program finished their fall season with a win in the Prairie Cup which featured a "Ryder Cup" style of match play between Sterling College, Bethel College and Friend University.

With strong play in the foursomes and best ball competition (winning 7 of 10 matches) Sterling golf was able to forge a sizable lead going into the individual match play portion of the event. Friends made a strong run in the individual match play portion and almost overtook the Warriors. Taylor Owens, a freshmen for Sterling, was able to pull a half point against Jay Cargile from Friends to clinch the cup for the Warriors.

"It was a great way for our guys to finish up the fall season" said Head Golf Coach Sean Gillespie. "They were able to go and not necessarily worry about posting a score but to just win holes. I know that both Bethel and Friends had a great time and will look forward to this event next fall. I believe that this fall was a good spring board for us for the Spring season. We learned a lot about ourselves and who we are and where we want to take the program. Some of our weaknesses were exposed as well as some of our strengths. It will be good for the guys to take a break now and be college students".

Warrior Golf Tees off Strong
09/25/2007

The Warrior golf program battled the wind (30-35 mph) as well as the conference opponents in the first round of the conference tournament today as they opened with a team score of 313, good enough for third place behind Bethany College and defending conference champion, Southwestern College. The team was led by Kevin Quinley and Jared Gregg who both posted very solid rounds of 76 in the gusty winds. Both Jared and Kevin are only 5 shots out of first place for the individual honors as well. "It was a solid start for our new program in our first conference tournament. We have a long ways to go as we develop our golf program into a first class program... tournaments like this one really help expose to us our strengths and weaknesses. I am very proud of the guys and the way they battled out there today...it was a tough day to play golf," remarked Head Coach Sean Gillespie.

Out of the 46 golfers in the tournament, only one posted a round under par. Sterling will be teeing off in the final groups Tuesday at the Eagle Bend Golf Club as they go for their first tournament win in school history.
