Ottawa, Kan. - Sterling College senior, Jake Bowser, won the Ottawa University Fall Invitational this past Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence, KS. Bowser was the leader after a 1-under par 69. His solid second round play led to a 2-over par 72, which gave him a one shot victory. "This is Jake's first college victory. His hard work and dedication to the game of golf has paid off,

" remarked Head Coach Luke Cureton. The men's team finished third with a two-day total of 603. This invitational was the designated conference tournament for the fall season. The third place finish is the highest for the Warriors in the fall conference tournament. The conference looks to be a great race this year when six schools were with in eight shots of the lead after the first round.

"I'm happy for the team and the third place finish," said Cureton. "We were in a three way tie for third after the first round. I was a little disappointed with our first round score of 304, but we were only seven shots out of the lead. Our guys do a great job of coming out the second day and posting a lower team score. We did it again by posting a score of 299. We still have some improvements, but overall we've positioned ourselves well for the spring conference season."

The women golfers also competed in the Ottawa University Fall Invitational. Sophomore Alexa Pelton once again led the Lady Warriors. Pelton had a two-day total 176 placing her 11th in a very strong field. Freshmen Katelynn Cantrell and Lauren Bonewell turned in their best collegiate performance to date. Cantrell had a two-day total of 180 placing her 14th, and Bonewell scored a 211 placing her 30th.

"I was happy for the women and the scores they posted during the tournament," Cureton stated. "Both Katelynn and Lauren posted better second round scores. They both are gaining confidence every day in practice, and it is showing in the tournaments. Alexa continues to post solid numbers that gives her a chance to medal at the tournaments."

The men will be playing in the Swede Invitational in Salina, KS this coming Monday, October 4, 2010. Then both the men and women will compete in their home tournament on Monday and Tuesday, October 11-12 at the Highlands Golf Course in Hutchinson, KS. Monday's round is a 12:00 noon shotgun start. The team would love to have you come out and support them !!
