Debut of World War II photographs at Sterling College

Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Never-before-exhibited wartime photography and recently discovered photos of Dwight D. Eisenhower will be on display in “Through a Forgotten Lens” at Sterling College in partnership with The Rescued Film Project. All of the images, including photographs from World War II and possibly the Korean War, were discovered when rolls of undeveloped film were sent to The Rescued Film project in 2014. An opening reception will be held for the public on Oct. 13 from 5-8 p.m. in the gallery of the Sterling College Art and Media Center.

“We are very excited to partner with The Rescued Film Project to host this exhibit of rescued photographs in our gallery space. To be the college to premiere these high profile images is an honor and a privilege. The photographer was capturing his part in a fight for freedom that changed the world. The opportunity to, in a small way, take part in what he recorded as important or memorable is a humbling thing. This is rare and unique exhibit for our art students, campus and visitors to experience and a great intersection of art with history,” said Daniel Swartz, chair of the department of art and design.

“Through a Forgotten Lens” was developed from rolls of film taken by a mix of unknown and known photographers. In addition to wartime photography, the show will exhibit photographs of Eisenhower and one of his trips to Europe. The Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, Kansas, confirmed one of the photographs was taken in Copenhagen, Denmark, based on a building in one of the photographs.

Tim Rives, interim director of education and research at the Eisenhower Center in the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas, will meet high school students at the exhibit on Oct. 18. Rives, an expert on Eisenhower’s life and presidency, will provide commentary and background for the photos on display.

“Through a Forgotten Lens” will be on display through Nov. 11. The gallery will be open to visitors from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays with an exception of being closed Oct. 20-21. Groups interested in visiting should contact assistant professor Swartz at 620-278-4361 or dswartz@sterling.edu. The Art and Media Center is located at 302 W. Washington St., Sterling.
