Physical Education and Health Assessment Training Labeled a Success

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Sterling College hosted 16 area school districts along with two Sterling professors and 18 students for national assessment training for PE and Health educators. The health training took place on Wednesday, September 21, followed by the physical education training on Thursday.

“By having a higher education facility partner in the training, our region will have increased capacity toperpetuate the assessment training and usage with current and future Health/PE teachers beyond the training that just occurred,” said Clelia McCrory, ESSDACK grant writer and career and technical education support. “Sterling College was a wonderful host for our training. The facilities were nice, and the staff was very helpful in setting up the room and making us feel comfortable. We would love to hold more training sessions at Sterling College.”

“We enjoyed being able to partner with ESSDACK, the community, and the Center for Disease Control to provide this training for the professionals in our local schools and our own students. We know that giving our students opportunities like this will produce graduates that are knowledgeable in their field and strong candidates when applying for their first job,” said Mary Ver Steeg, associate professor of exercise science at Sterling College.

“The speakers this week were excellent. They taught us how to compare our health and physical education program with the state and national standards, so that we can make sure we have a great curriculum. We are always looking for ways to sharpen our tools for selecting and implementing curriculum to make a quality program for our students,” said Jill Rowland, health and PE teacher at Sterling High School.

Participating school districts included Central Plains, Pretty Prairie, Sterling, Lyons, Chase-Raymond, Little River-Windom, Nickerson, Hoisington, Greensburg (Kiowa County High School), Sedgwick, Inman, Canton-Galva, Lindsborg (Smoky Valley USD#400), Halstead, and Comanche County.
