Thursday, October 14, 2010

Sterling, Kan. - The Sterling College Warriors Men's Soccer Team dropped two KCAC conference games this past week in the middle of a long home stretch on the season schedule. On Saturday, the nationally ranked Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes came into Sterling and beat the Warriors 9-2. On Wednesday, Ottawa University beat SC on Sterling's home field by a score of 2-0.

In the first match, Abe White had a perfect shooting game, scoring both of Sterling's goals in the 9-2 loss on only two shots. White's first goal was assisted by Michael Wales and the second goal was unassisted. The Warriors were unable to overcome the Coyotes' overwhelming attack even though Sterling had a one man advantage most of the match. Wesleyan's Anthony Russo was ejected in the 40th minute after receiving a caution moments before his ejection. At the time of the ejection, Kansas Wesleyan was leading the Warriors 4-1. The Coyotes would add five more goals with SC adding only one for the final score of 9-2.

Ottawa struck in the first half of the second match with a Ryan Wohlgemooth goal in the 24th minute. The Braves increased their lead in the 55th minute when Paul Oswald was able to slip a goal past Warrior keeper Riley Zelus. Ottawa used seven shots on target to get past SC in the match. Sterling managed only two shots on target, one apiece by Cuyler Prichard and Cameron Byard. Zelus had four saves in the match, but was unable to shut out the Braves.

With the two losses this week, the Warriors fall to 0-4 in the KCAC, 2-9-2 overall. On Saturday, SC will host Bethany College at 3:00pm. The next two games are critical for Sterling as they will go a long way in determining seeding in the KCAC Tournament.
