What happens when two creative minds from vastly different backgrounds come together in one art show? You get “Duality”— the bold and dynamic senior exhibition from Sterling College graphic design majors Brooklyn Kuhn of Victoria, Kan., and Jonah Lugo of Corpus Christi, Texas.

This special two-day show will be on display Friday and Saturday, May 9–10, at the Sterling College Art & Media Center Gallery, 306 West Washington in Sterling. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The title, Duality, reflects more than just two artists—it captures the contrast in their artistic journeys and creative approaches.

For Lugo, art began as a hobby. “It started as a leisure activity, something I did for fun,” he said. “But as I kept going, I realized it was more than just a pastime—it was something I wanted to pursue.”

Kuhn, on the other hand, found her spark earlier—back in high school—when she saw how design could transform everyday products. “It came from learning how I could make my own designs and see them on actual items,” Kuhn said. “It was a gift given to me that I wanted to pursue.”

Both artists point to creativity as the driving force behind their decision to study graphic design.

“I’ve always loved making things look good—whether it was a school project or someone asking me to help make something ‘look cool,’” Kuhn explained. “It’s where I thrive.”

Lugo echoed that sentiment: “Graphic design allowed me to explore my creativity while building on my background in art. That blend really appealed to me.”

Their time at Sterling has played a key role in shaping them not only as artists, but as individuals.

“My experience at Sterling has been exceptional,” said Lugo. “The professors are approachable, and the sense of community is something I’ll always value.”

Kuhn, a student-athlete, reflected on the ups and downs of college life with gratitude. “It’s been an adventure, but I wouldn’t trade it. Sterling taught me that I’m capable of more than I thought—and I’ve met some of the best people here.”

As graduation nears, both artists are preparing for what comes next. Lugo plans to return home to weigh his future options, while Kuhn is awaiting responses from job applications and is open to where the road leads.

Their exhibit is a celebration of two distinct voices united by a shared passion—and a showcase of the talent nurtured at Sterling College.
