Sterling College Forensics Debate competes at Nationals
Sterling College’s Debate and Forensics team delivered a strong national showing at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament, held March 18-22, at Missouri State University in Springfield.
Competing for Sterling College were Davi Brooks, Cristian Vargui, Brennan Blake, Bailey Brewer, and Chandler Reiman, under the direction of coach Ken Troyer. The team faced competitors from colleges and universities across the country in a demanding multi-day event featuring debate and individual forensic competition.
Leading the way for Sterling, Cristian Vargui earned a top-ten national finish, placing ninth in the nation in Novice IPDA Debate. Reflecting on his performance, Vargui smiled and remarked, “Can’t rush greatness.”
The strong result highlights continued growth within the program and demonstrates Sterling’s ability to compete at a high level on the national stage.
Davi Brooks also turned in an impressive performance, earning an Award of Excellence in Junior Varsity IPDA Debate. Reflecting on the experience, Brooks said, “While I naturally would have wished to advance to a breakout round, I am grateful to have received an Award of Excellence. It affirmed the work I have put into this activity and has motivated me to continue improving next year—not only in debate, but in additional forensic events as well.”
The national competition marks another step in a successful season for the Sterling College program, which continues to emphasize both competitive achievement and student development. Through debate and forensics, students sharpen critical thinking, public speaking, and research skills—abilities that translate directly to academic and professional success.
The season is not yet complete for Sterling. The team will close out the year at the American Forensics Association National Tournament, scheduled for April 4–6 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Representing Sterling at that competition will Davi Brooks, Bailey Brewer, and Brennan Blake.
With national recognition already in hand and another major tournament ahead, the Sterling College Debate and Forensics team continues to build momentum and showcase the college’s commitment to excellence in communication and competitive speaking.
