Sterling Hosts First Track Meet in over a Decade

On Saturday, April 10, the Sterling College track team members did something they haven't done in a very long time. They competed at home. Due to the recent track renovation-which included a track surface installed in the summer of 2009 and a new discus and hammer ring installed just this spring-Sterling College was able to hold a home track meet for the first time in over a decade as the host of the ACCK Championships.

Run (or Walk) for China: Sweet and Sour 5K Run

April 13, 2010, Sterling, Kan.-The Sweet and Sour 5K Run is this Saturday, April 17. Check-in starts at 9:15 a.m. at Sterling College's Gleason Center. The race begins at 10 a.m. from the Gleason Center.

There will be open registration on Saturday for those still wanting to participate. The entry fee for the 5K is $20. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female participants. Coffee from The Metropolitan in Hutchinson will be sold at Gleason.

Sterling College Invites Community to Upcoming Events

April 15-The SC Biology Department is hosting Mr. Lewis D. Schmidt from the Medical Center in Hutchinson. Mr. Schmidt will speak on "Basic Nuclear Science" at 7 p.m. in Thompson Hall 142. Admission is free.

April 16 and 17-The SC Theatre Department presents "Steel Magnolias" in Culbertson Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, students and children, and are available at the door each night beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Sterling College Junior Taylor Libby Presents Paper at National Undergraduate Literature Conference

April 19, 2010, Sterling, Kansas-Out of over 400 papers submitted to the National Undergraduate Literature Conference this year, only 200 were accepted for presentation. A paper by Sterling College junior English major Taylor Libby was one those, and Libby was asked to present her ideas at the Conference in Ogden, Utah, on April 4.

"As I enter my senior year it is important that I begin to really build my résumé," Libby said. "This conference was a great experience and a good opportunity to get my feet wet in the English world."

Seven Sterling College Athletic Training Students Achieve Kansas Athletic Training Society Academic Honors

More than half of Sterling College's junior and senior athletic training majors were honored by the Kansas Athletic Trainers' Society for outstanding academic achievement in SC's accredited Athletic Training Program.

Two students received First-Team All-Academic Honors: Andrew Wolfenberger of Newton, Kan., and Joe Streckfus of Lakin, Kan. First-Team honorees had to be full time students of junior status or higher during the 2008 calendar year with a minimum 3.8 average GPA.

Sterling College Senior Art Exhibition Opens Sunday, May 2

The Sterling College Art and Design Department has two students graduating this semester, James Harmon and Bonnie Windle. Their senior exhibition opens May 2 and runs through May 15, with the reception on Thursday, May 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

This is a good story for everyone involved," said Sterling College Director of Athletic Training Pete Manely. It's good for SC graduate Kim Elwood '05, who will leave her position as assistant athletic trainer at Sterling College this summer to pursue her master's in athletic training at the University of Oklahoma. It's also good for SC alumnus Jason Coles '09, who just finished his master's at Ohio University and will take Elwood's position. "And it's good for the Sterling College Athletic Training Program," said Manely.

Sterling College Jazz Band on Tour May 1-4

From Ozark, Mo., to Broken Arrow, Okla., the Sterling College Jazz Band will be making a joyful noise May 1-4 during their spring tour. The Jazz Band will perform at churches, schools and retirement homes, with a program that includes popular numbers as well as hymn arrangements of "All Creatures of Our God and King," "Trust and Obey," and "Standing on the Promises."
