A small plane flying low over the Sterling College campus caught the attention of several onlookers recently. The plane piqued the interest of College students and employees as it dropped several rolls of toilet paper and a package.
On March 24, the Sterling College Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics hosted mock interviews for the junior and senior students in the department. The experience simulated an entrance interview to a graduate program or work place.
When the cafeteria staff at Sterling College learned of the unexpected death of coworker Ben Leake, they wanted to give their respects by attending the funeral service. Unfortunately, there was not enough staff to serve lunch at the College and allow everyone to attend the funeral – until the students stepped in.
Twelve students and staff members from Sterling College drove to Wilmington, Del., to participate in Christian missions during their spring break. Wilmington is the home of Urban Promise, a non-profit organization whose goal is to equip children and young adults with skills necessary for academic achievement, life management and personal growth.
The Sterling College junior varsity debate and forensics season closed this weekend, adding additional trophies to the ever-growing display case in Spencer Hall. The team took second place at the JV National Debate Tournament held at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan., March 14-16.
In order to show appreciation for the town of Sterling, on April 26, volunteers will assemble to complete service projects that give back to the community during the 5th annual Sterling College Love Sterling event.
The show must go on. Despite school cancellations and weather delays, nine schools attended Sterling College’s Theatre Workshop Day on March 3. Over 100 students participated in the day that included morning workshops and a matinee performance of “The Glass Menagerie.”
When Jared Brown ’11 came to Sterling College to study athletic training, he had no idea where his major would lead him. Brown, who currently works at PT Plus Physical Therapy in Andover, Kan., just finished a month-long job working as an athletic trainer for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Sterling College seniors Heather Shaw of Sterling, Kan., and Kadi Smith of Julesburg, Colo., were named as the spring 2014 Teachers of Promise. Each semester, two candidates who are clinical teaching the following semester are recognized by Sterling College and the Kansas State Department of Education for their exemplary character, dedication and achievement.
The Sterling College chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has been hard at work to raise money for this year’s national competition in Nashville, Tenn. To raise funds, they have created and designed a custom deck of playing cards that feature photos of former Sterling College presidents, athletic teams, academic departments, buildings and campus clubs.
